Swimming is an important skill that can save the lives of children. Our primary concern is making sure children are safe in and around water. Because of this we also offer swim classes that are specific for children with special needs. Safety is the initial skill we teach in our special needs classes. Focusing on safety, it all starts with learning the proper breathing techniques, then they learn how to float on their back while learning the skills of swimming.

The aquatic environment is excellent for children with special needs because water exercises promote cognitive and motor skills, while improving flexibility, coordination, and range of motion. Swimming also strengthens and tones the muscles without hurting vulnerable joints. It allows longer exercise time because the body is working with buoyancy instead of gravity. Swimming can also increase the child’s self-esteem, courage and trust since he/she is able to forget his/her limitations while learning new behaviors, skills and learning strategies in an environment that promotes success mixed with fun and play.

Even though children with special needs have a higher risk of drowning, they're often turned away from swimming lessons due to health issues. Here at AquaSafe swimming school we do the opposite. We are certified in Red Cross Adapted Aquatics for Special Needs and have worked with a wide range of students with special needs. Some examples include Autism, Asperger’s syndrome, Down syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, 4P-Deletion Syndrome, ADD, and ADHD.

While our lessons may appear simplistic and fun they are in reality carefully orchestrated and tailored to each child's needs and abilities. Making sure children are safe in and around the water is our primary concern.
